Deworming Protocol
<Click here to download this protocol (Microsoft Word format)>
In order for a deworming protocol to be successful and cost effective, the appropriate drug must be used at the proper intervals from spring through fall. Programs should be tailored to each farm, as isolated horses may need fewer dewormings than those horses on larger farms.
Fecal Exams and Egg Counts:
- These tests are essential! Insure that your money buys the appropriate product!
- Yearly exams - more often for larger farms or farms with high horse traffic.
- Screen all new horses.
Ideal Protocol - "Best":
- Stongid C fed on a daily basis with a boticide (Ivermectin or Moxidectin) spring and fall.
- Deworm at least yearly for tapeworms (Pyrantel Pamoate or Praziquantel)
- Ask about Preventicare, a program offered by Stongid C to cover the costs of colic surgery.
Minimal Protocol
- Ivermectin/Praziquantel or Moxidectin product spring and fall.
Most Common Protocol
- Rotating major class of dewormers every 6 to 12 weeks (12 weeks for Quest).
- Use boticide spring and fall (Ivermectin or Moxidectin).
- Deworm for at least tapeworms yearly (Pyrantel Pamoate or Praziquantel).
